SPORTSMANSHIP

  • The purpose of this League is to have fun and promote the sport of urban axe throwing in a safe, friendly, welcoming, and inclusive environment.

  • Unsportsmanlike conduct will not be tolerated.

  • Any behavior that is deemed violent, harassing, and/or inappropriate in any way, as witnessed by the referee or other Hard Axes staff will result in ejection from all play for the remainder of the night.

  • A player who is ejected from play must leave the premises immediately.  Play will not resume until the ejected player has left.

  • Officials reserve the right to end a match at any point if the overall sportsmanship is out of line.

  • Captains are to be the team liaison to discuss any call or rule with an official during match play.

TEAMS

TEAMS ARE OPTIONAL

  • Each player competes as an individual and may optionally also compete as part of a Team.

SUBMITTING A ROSTER

  • Each team must submit a roster with a minimum of 4 and maximum of 6 players.

  • No player may register for more than one team

  • Rosters must be submitted, fees paid, and waivers signed before any player may participate in a match.

  • Rosters must be finalized and no changes are allowed after the 1st week of play.

  • No player who is not on your roster may play in the league.

  • Only rostered players will be eligible for playoffs.

PLAYERS

  • A team consists of 4 to 6 players (no gender requirements).

  • The fifth and sixth players are subs; only 4 players may play each night.

  • A team must have 3 players present to avoid forfeit.

    • If your team does forfeit, your teammates that do show up should still throw their axes.

    • Substitute axe throwers are not permitted.

MATCH SCHEDULE

START TIME

  • Each match will start at its scheduled time.

    • Contact us if you have specific schedule limitations on a single day

  • If a player does not start the match by 5 minutes after the scheduled start time, they will forfeit.

    • Players should plan to be “on deck” 5 minutes before the start of their match.

    • Players are allowed to make up missed matches in weeks prior to the Playoffs.

    • Players that win by forfeiture will receive the match win and their average score thrown that week will be applied to that match:

      1. This average includes all matches thrown that week, whether originally scheduled, or made up from other weeks.

    • The player who receives the forfeit lose will receive 0 game points, but their average score per game played will remain unchanged.

PRE-MATCH

  • Rock, Paper, Scissors - Lane choice

    1. Players use Rock Paper Scissors to choose lane:

      1. Winner = best 2 of 3;

      2. Players may 'opt out' of Rock, Paper, Scissors effectively giving the lane choice to the other player.

    2. Players get 3 practice throws before first match of the night;

    3. Players get 1 practice throw before second match of the night.

  • Signalling Match Start

    1. After warm up throws are complete but before a match officially begins, players perform a courtesy clinking of axe heads:

      1. If this does not happen, there is no penalty, it is strictly a courtesy and sign of sportsmanship.

MATCH FORMAT

  • Format roughly follows that of the International Axe Throwing Federation, with modifications

  • Each player will throw 2-3 matches per night against opposing players.

    • Each match consists of three 5 throw rounds.

    • The player with the highest score in a round, wins that round.

    • The player winning 2 out of 3 rounds, wins the match. The third round is always played.

    • If the match is tied after 5 throws, a 6th throw is taken. (Only 5 axes are counted in total points.)

  • Players switch lanes between each round.

  • Referees record overall score for each individual in a match AND the number of matches won/lost/tied.

    • Overall matches won is a tiebreaker

RULES

EQUIPMENT

  • Hard Axes will provide all necessary equipment

    • You may not bring your own axe.

  • All participants must wear closed toe shoes.

THROWING FORMAT

  • Hard Axes Throwing staff will go over safety and throwing procedures before your first night of league play.

  • Hard Axes Throwing staff will be on hand throughout the season to oversee that participants are throwing their axes safely.

    • If a staff member determines you are not throwing your axe in a safe manner they will step in and correct your form, or remove you from the game if you cannot safely handle the axe.

  • Players throw at the same time; referee will count down 3-2-1-throw.

  • No player may cross the red line until both players have thrown their axes.

SCORE KEEPING

  • Hard Axes Throwing staff will keep and record the final score for each player after each game.

  • Point values are as follows:

    • The bullseye (black ring) is worth 5 points

    • The red ring is worth 3 points

    • The blue ring is worth 1 point

    • The green dots above the rings are worth 7 points

      • These dots are called Clutch and players must call out ‘Clutch’ before their throw.

      • ‘Clutch’ may only be called on the final (5th) throw of a game.

      • Players who hit Clutch but do not call it out receive 0 points for their throw.

      • Once Clutch is called, only that point area is valid – all other rings are worth 0 points.

      • Once Clutch is called and recorded by the referee, it cannot be changed or rescinded.

      • All scoring is based on where the majority of the blade lands and stays in the target.

        • When measuring an axe that has landed between two point areas, always use the outer edge of the paint line (the one farther from the center of the target) as the border for measuring point value.

        • If teams cannot agree where the majority of the blade is, Hard Axes Throwing staff have equipment on hand to measure and make a final ruling.

        • The exception to the majority rule is when a player declares Clutch – as long as any part of the blade is touching the green paint, the throw is counted for 7 points.

  • If an axe falls out before it is retrieved, the throw will be counted as 0 points.

PLAYOFFS

SEEDINGS

  • Playoffs are based on the overall games won/lost during the regular season.

  • The number of individuals (an teams) to qualify for playoffs will vary from season to season and is based on the number of players/teams registered.

TIEBREAKERS

  • All teams tied in the standings will use the following tiebreakers, in order, to determine seeding:

    • Overall points scored.

    • Head to head.

    • Most regular season matches won.

    • Coin toss.

  • 3-way tiebreakers:  When 3 or more teams are tied, all teams will be ranked on the same criteria as opposed to knocking a team out then returning to the top of the tiebreaker list.  Tiebreakers will be applied until all teams that are tied can be ranked using the same criteria.  If the teams did not play one another in an even amount of games then 'head to head' will be skipped.

INDIVIDUALS: DOUBLE ELIMINATION TOURNAMENT

  • Double Elimination means players must lose twice to be eliminated from the tournament.

  • The final match will always be between one undefeated competitor and a competitor that has 1 loss:

    1. This means the player entering with a previous loss must defeat the undefeated player in two full sets to constitute two losses.

  • Matches are best 3 out of 5. The Match ends once a winner is determined; remaining games are not played.

TEAMS: SINGLE ELIMINATION TOURNAMENT

  • Team score is determined by the total number of points scored by all 4 members of a team during each of 3 rounds.
